Black Heart Bart remains an outright $3.40 favourite in 2017 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au despite drifting, ahead of Derryn ($5.50) and Clearly Innocent ($6.50).

Will Black Heart Bart justify favouritism and win the 2017 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset.

1st

Black Heart Bart ($3.40)

Black Heart Bart is undoubtedly the class horse of the Kingsford-Smith Cup field and should win the race if he is ridden to his strengths. The five-time Group 1 winner returned to the races this year for second in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m), before posting consecutive wins in the Group 1 Ladbrokes CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m). Having returned from a freshen-up for seventh in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) last weekend, the Blackfriars gelding was simply ridden too close to the pace and if he finds a good position off the speed this weekend, should prove extremely tough to beat in the Kingsford-Smith Cup.

2nd

Jungle Edge ($9)

Wet tracker Jungle Edge will need to cross the field from the outside barrier to find the early pace, but he should be perfectly suited to the softs conditions at Eagle Farm and will be hard to run down. Having returned to racing in career-best form this time, the Dubawi gelding ran third in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) before posting a dominant win in the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m). Having again finished third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 15th, Jungle Edge was luckless in the Listed Wangoom Handicap (1200m) on May 3rd, but arrived in Brisbane last weekend for a dominant win in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m). Regular hoop Kevin Forrester will take the ride and Jungle Edge is arguably offered his best chance of winning a Group 1 race in the Kingsford-Smith Cup.

3rd

Hopfgarten ($21)

Talented local Hopfgarten relishes racing at Eagle Farm and is in the right form to post an upset in the Kingsford-Smith Cup. A strong and consistent performer through a Melbourne Spring Carnival campaign in 2016, the Mossman gelding returned to the races for a smart second in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) four weeks ago and should find a good position in transit from barrier 9. Trainer Robert Heathcote is confident that Hopfgarten will run a smart race and the horse is over the Kingsford-Smith Cup odds at his current quote.
