Derryn Leads Early 2017 Darley Kingsford-Smith Betting

May 22nd, 2017

Three-year-old Derryn is poised to break through for a maiden win at the highest level when he takes his place in Saturday’s Group 1 Darley Kingsford-Smith (1300m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane.

That is the tale of the tape in early betting markets for the Darley Kingsford-Smith at Ladbrokes.com.au, where the in-form sprinter has firmed into $6 favouritism prior to the confirmation of a final field and barrier draw for Saturday’s Group 1 feature race.

Posting three wins and a further four minors through his twelve career starts so far, Derryn returned this time for fourth in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) on February 4th before working to the line well to place third in the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes (1200m) three weeks later.

Returning to winning form in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m), the Hinchinbrook colt placed mid-pack in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships before savaging the line to post an easy win in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) only a week later.

Having hit the line well for third in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) a fortnight ago, Derryn appears as though he will relish a step up in distance and should prove tough to beat in the BTC Cup, nee-Darley Kingsford-Smith.

Clearly Innocent will make his Queensland racing debut in the Darley Kingsford-Smith and is the sole occupant of the second line of betting at generous $7.50 odds.

Clearly Innocent announced himself to the Australian racing community while under the care of Scone trainer Greg Bennett last autumn; taking out the Country Championships Final (1400m) before ending his season with a smart win in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m).

Having failed to produce much through three starts in spring, the Not A Single Doubt gelding required a run when ninth for Kris Lees in the Hawkesbury Gold Rush (1100m) first-up, but successfully defended the Luskin Star Stakes a fortnight ago.

Interestingly figuring as the only other runner currently available at Darley Kingsford Smith odds of less-than $10, Counterattack arguably offers punters the best value for money at an $8 quote.

Counterattack is a multiple black type winner and has returned to excellent condition leading into the Darley Kingsford-Smith.

Failing to fire in either of the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) or Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) upon resuming, the Exceed And Excel entire returned from a freshen-up to finish second in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) on April 15th and arguably would have won the Doomben 10,000 a fortnight ago, with a little extra distance.

The 2017 Darley Kingsford-Smith (BTC Cup) field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
