Fourteen runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s featured 2016 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Japonisme ($4) remains outright favourite in 2016 BTC Cup betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Fell Swoop ($4.40) and Malaguerra ($6).
Will Japonisme justify favouritism and win the 2016 BTC Cup or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Japonisme has returned to typically slick form this season and will be tough to beat from the ideal barrier 3 in the BTC Cup, with only 57kgs in tow. Having capped an impressive 2015 campaign with success in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), the Choisir gelding resumed this time for third in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) before a luckless run for fifth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m). Running on for third in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 24th before returning to winning form in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships, Japonisme won a strong barrier trial leading into Saturday’s featured and represents good value at current BTC Cup odds.
Peter and Paul Snowden saddled outsider Hot Snitzel to success in last year’s edition of the BTC Cup, and are offered a good opportunity for another positive result in Dothraki. A strong and consistent performer through his entire racing career, the Mossman gelding resumed this time for seventh in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) before savaging the line for third in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) on March 19th. Having since run on for fifth in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), Dothraki has trialled well in the lead-up to the BTC Cup, will leave from the rails draw and has been confirmed to be partnered by leading hoop Blake Shinn.
Stratum Star ($51)
Stratum Star is a Group 1 winner, more than capable at the class and distance and is simply over the BTC Cup odds at his current quote of $51 for success, or $12 to finish in the first three. A standout for leading Victoria trainer Darren Weir in 2015, the Stratum entire ran third in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) before beating a particularly classy field to the line in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 26th. Having returned to the paddock after running third in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and winning the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) most notably, Stratum Star has produced a number of typically impressive performances through four starts this year, highlighted by a close second in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m).
