A talented field of fourteen has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s most exciting prospects.
Chris Waller has been confirmed to launch a three-pronged on the Doomben feature this weekend after confirming all of Delectation, Japonisme and Counterattack in the 2016 BTC Cup field.
Delectation has produced a number of standout results for Waller through his entire racing career, between lacklustre performances, posting a career-total of five wins and seven minors through 23 competitive appearances.
Capping a strong 2015 preparation with success in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m), the Shamardal gelding has been unable to find peak condition through three starts this time and will perhaps require luck in running in the BTC Cup from barrier 12.
Japonisme has returned to racing in typically scintillating form this time and could very well receive the run of the race in the BTC Cup from barrier 3, with Glyn Schofield in the saddle.
Ending his debut year for an impressive win in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), the Choisir gelding resumed this time for a close third in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m); progressing to fifth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before again finishing third in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).
Having returned to winning form in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m), Japonisme has been charged with carrying only 57kgs on Saturday and will be very hard to beat.
Counterattack savaged the line for a close second in the Arrowfield Sprint last start, but has taken something of a hit this morning after being allocated the awkward barrier 11 for his run in the BTC Cup.
Resuming this time for third in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m), the Redoute’s Choice colt ran fifth in the Listed Darby Munro (1200m) on March 19th in his only other start prior to the Arrowfield Sprint.
Peter and Paul Snowden will also saddle multiple runners after confirming Dothraki (barrier 1) and Charlie Boy (barrier 6) in the BTC Cup field.
Fell Swoop remains favourite to win the BTC Cup but has been charged with overcoming barrier 10 with 58.5kgs in tow.
Resuming for an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), Fell Swoop progressed to fourth in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) before placing second in Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
Having returned to winning form in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago, the Not A Single Doubt gelding will be partnered by Jay Ford on Saturday.
