Trust In A Gust was a standout performer for Darren Weir over the Spring Carnival and should take plenty of condition from a first-up run for second at Caulfield ahead of Saturday’s featured Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben.
Finishing outside the first three just twice in eighteen career starts so far, Trust In A Gust won the Jeep Don’t Hold Back BM90 (1200m) upon resuming in spring; running second in the Listed Drummond Golf Stakes (1200m) and ending his campaign with success in each of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
Confident he was far from his best when a close second to in-form sprinter Red Bomber in the Vobis Gold Sprint (1200m) on April 18th, Weir told The Courier Mail he has been pleased with condition of the Keep The Faith entire and is confident he is up to the task of what is sure to be a talent-rich 2015 BTC Cup field.
“I have just kept rolling the dice with this horse and why wouldn’t I with the way he has been performing?” Weir said.
“I was hoping to pinch one big race with this horse in Melbourne and I ended up snaring two.
“I chased the VOBIS Gold money with him at the start of his career but he just kept raising the bar.
“He ran OK first-up but probably got to the lead too early and he will have benefited a lot from the run.
“I haven’t had much of a look at the field for the BTC Cup but my horse certainly deserves his chance.”
Posting four consecutive wins most notably over an impressive 2013/14 summer campaign, Trust In A Gust was unlucky to be blocked for a run late when sixth in the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) on March 15th before ending the campaign a close second to Worth A Ransom in the Vobis Gold Reef (1600m).
The 2015 BTC Cup final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today (Wednesday, May 6th).
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best early 2015 BTC Cup odds for which Trust In A Gust can be taken at a generous quote of $7.50 for success.
