2010 BTC Cup Odds & Betting

May 14th, 2010

The Tony Noonan-trained Ortensia is the hot favourite for tomorrows $400,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m), the opening Group 1 feature of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival at Doomben Racecourse.

Impressive winner of the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) last start, Ortensia shortened further in the betting markets on Wednesday when the four-year-old Testa Rossa mare drew well with barrier four, and is now paying $3.30 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Second favourite for the 2010 BTC Cup is Melito. The Gerald Ryan-trained Redoute’s Choice filly is currently at $5 with Ladbrokes.com.au and will jump mid-field from barrier seven with Blake Shinn aboard.

Melito is one of three runners attempting to become the first filly to win the BTC Cup since it became a weight-for-age event back in 1991.

The other two are the Peter Moody-trained Set For Fame, drawn ideally in barrier two at $14 odds, and Anthony Cumming’s Sister Madly out wide in barrier 11 and paying $21 at Ladbrokes.com.au.

There are a number of other stayers with plenty of talent and the ability to cause an upset in the BTC Cup on Saturday including Shellscrape and Mic Mac.

Another Sydney raider, the Chris Waller-trained Shellscrape is following closely in the betting markets at $6.50 after running a gallant second to Ortensia in the Galaxy but has had their chances slightly marred after drawing barrier 10.

Mic Mac, currently at $7 with Ladbrokes.com.au, is another excellent chance, the four-year-old Statue of Liberty gelding coming off a solid fifth to Hot Danish in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

Other longer priced runners representing good value are the reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year King Mufhasa (barrier 12) at $21 and Ghetto Blaster (barrier five) at $16.

King Mufhasa has plenty of early speed and if they can get out of the gates well could lead all-the-way while Ghetto Blaster, trained by Gold Coast-based mentor Gillian Heinrich, is coming off a good win in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m).

The other two group features at Doomben’s Racefest tomorrow are the $125,000 Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2020m) where the in-form Blueys Way is the current $3.20 favourite, and the $100,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2020m) where Tabulate will start as the favourite.
