Final Field for 2010 BTC Cup

May 12th, 2010

The final field for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival’s opening Group 1 race, the $400,000 Bundy Red Rum BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben this Saturday has been announced.

After attracting 19 nominations, a less than capacity field of just 12 stayers have been paid up for the race including the impressive Testa Rossa mare Ortensia.

The Tony Noonan-trained four-year-old is sure to start as one of the warm favourites in the 2010 BTC Cup as she comes off a win in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).

Ortensia has drawn fairly well with barrier four for Saturday and will be ridden by big race specialist Hugh Bowman.

The BTC Cup is shaping up to be a great rematch between Ortensia and the horse she beat in the Galaxy, the Chris Waller-trained Shellscrape.

Shellscrape is an improving three-year-old Dane Shadow colt and despite drawing out wide in barrier 10 for Saturday is still a top chance.

In-form hoop Stathi Katsidis will ride Shellscrape in the BTC Cup after stewards ruled the jockey’s contract with Waller was binding despite protests by rival trainer Gillian Heinrich who wanted Katsidis to take the mount on her runner Ghetto Blaster.

A jockey is yet to be named for Ghetto Blaster, the Gold Coast-trained six-year-old coming off a last start win in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago at Eagle Farm.

Other top chances in the 2010 BTC Cup include Victorian raider Set For Fame trained by Peter Moody and drawn ideally in barrier two, and the Gerald Ryan-trained Redoute’s Choice filly Melito coming off a last start second to Hot Danish in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

Meanwhile legendary trainer Bart Cummings has two hopefuls with Latin News (barrier six) and Russeting (barrier nine).

The other feature Doomben races on Saturday include the $125,000 Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2020m) and the $100,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2020m).
