This Saturday Doomben Racecourse is set to host the opening Group 1 race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the $400,000 Bundy Red Rum BTC Cup (1200m).
The esteemed course at Doomben in Queensland have three consecutive Saturday’s booked full of Group winter races as part the carnival, and it all gets underway with a Racefest on Saturday.
There are three Group status races planned at the meeting, headlined of course by the BTC Cup, which has attracted 19 classy nominees.
A number of impressive Group 1 winners from the Sydney Autumn Carnival have headed up to the Sunshine State for the first major race including Ortensia. The Tony Noonan-trained Testa Rossa mare took out The Galaxy (1100m) back on April 17 but has not had a start since.
Other popular nominations in the 2010 BTC Cup include T J Smith Stakes winning filly Melito, Mic Mac and the Peter Snowden-trained Lonhro mare Beaded.
The Chris Waller-trained Stryker and 2009 Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready will be backing up from an equal fourth place in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) that they ran last Saturday if they gain a start in the Cup.
Two horses at the centre of a BTC Cup jockey controversy are Shellscrape, Rosehill-based trainer Chris Waller’s second nomination, and Gillian Heinrich’s Ghetto Blaster.
In-form jockey Stathi Katsidis has been double booked for Saturday’s Cup, engaged to ride Shellscrape by his manager after apparently having already committed himself to be available for all of Ghetto Blaster’s rides this winter.
Heinrich takes the matter to the stewards this week, threatening to cease all association with Katsidis if he doesn’t ride Ghetto Blaster in the BTC Cup, including any chance he would have of riding Golden Slipper winner Military Rose again.
The final field of acceptances for the BTC Cup will be announced later in the week and published here.
